Faux finished stone dates back to the 15th century. Even the Royalty of that age found it too expensive to import all the marble that it would take to cover an entire room. The answer was to have a skilled master painter duplicate the tiles with paint. All the castles in Europe used this technique.
In order to learn this technique, the painter must first learn how the stone was quarried. For example, marble is quarried with the veins at a 45 degree angle to the edge so that it wont break at that weak spot. Any painter who forgets this will not have a realistic match.
